RBC Advantage Banking Account for All Your Newcomer Firsts - Year One at $0

The banking component of the Newcomer Advantage is the RBC Advantage Banking account, which normally costs $12.95/month. Newcomers pay no monthly fee for the first 12 months.

What is included from day one:

  • Unlimited debit transactions — buy, send, and withdraw in Canada without per-transaction fees
  • Unlimited Interac e-Transfers — send and receive money with no per-transfer charge
  • Free international money transfers — send funds to the U.S. and internationally at no RBC transfer fee
  • No RBC ATM surcharge — RBC waives its own fee when you use another Canadian bank’s ATM (the other bank’s machine may still charge its own fee)
  • No minimum balance — all account benefits apply regardless of how much you keep in the account
  • 24/7 mobile and online banking — full account access through the RBC Mobile app and RBC Online Banking

After the first year, the account reverts to the standard $12.95/month fee. Customers who hold other eligible RBC products — such as a mortgage or investment account — may be able to reduce this fee to as low as $0 through the RBC Value Program.

RBC Cash Back Mastercard — Building Credit in Canada

One of the most significant challenges for newcomers to Canada is establishing a credit history. Without a Canadian credit file, most credit card issuers will decline applications or offer very low limits. RBC’s Newcomer Advantage removes this barrier for clients who open an RBC personal banking account.

Card Details

Feature Detail
Annual fee $0
Second card $0
Standard purchase rate 20.99%
Cash advance rate 22.99%
Cash back — groceries Up to 2%
Cash back — all other purchases Up to 1%
Canadian credit history required No (for RBC personal banking clients)
Accepted Worldwide (Mastercard network)

Promotional Cash Back Offer

New to Canada cardholders earn up to 12% bonus cash back for the first three months. This offer ends October 31, 2026 - applications submitted after that date will not qualify for the promotional rate.

Worked example: If you spend $1,500 on groceries and everyday purchases in the first three months, 12% bonus cash back on $1,500 equals $180 in cash back earned during the promotional period. After three months, the standard rate of up to 2% on groceries and up to 1% on other purchases applies.

Cash back credits accumulate automatically — no manual redemption or tracking is required. Cash back is typically credited to your account annually or when you close the account.

RBC High Interest Savings Account — 4.60% Promotional Rate

New clients can also get a 4.60% interest rate for the first three months when you open your first RBC High Interest Savings Account. This is a promotional rate and after three months, the standard variable rate applies.

Feature Detail
Promotional rate (first 3 months) 4.60%
Minimum deposit None
Monthly fee $0
Interest calculation Daily
Interest payment Monthly
CDIC insured Yes, up to $100,000

Worked example: If you deposit $10,000 into the account at opening and leave it for three months at 4.60%, you would earn approximately $115 in interest during the promotional period (calculated as $10,000 × 4.60% ÷ 12 months × 3 months). After three months, the standard variable rate applies — confirm the current standard rate with RBC at the time of opening.

Additional Benefits

Free small safety deposit box — one year: RBC provides a complimentary small safety deposit box, subject to availability. This is useful for storing passports, immigration documents, lease agreements, and other important papers securely. After one year, the standard annual rental fee applies.

200-language support: RBC branch advisors, phone banking, and online support are available in more than 200 languages. Many RBC advisors have personal experience as newcomers and can connect you with community partners for housing assistance, career services, childcare resources, and mentorship programs.

1,100+ branches and 4,000 ATMs: RBC operates one of Canada’s largest physical branch networks, with ATMs available across the country.

After the First Year — What Changes

Understanding the transition out of the promotional period helps avoid surprises:

Item During Year 1 After Year 1
Advantage Banking monthly fee $0 $12.95 (or less with Value Program)
Safety deposit box Free Standard annual fee
HISA rate 4.60% (first 3 months) Standard variable rate
Credit card cash back Up to 12% (first 3 months) Up to 2% groceries / 1% other
Credit card annual fee $0 $0 (no change)

The credit card remains fee-free after the first year. The Advantage Banking account fee can be managed through the Value Program — see the Advantage Banking account review for details on qualifying products and the two-of-three monthly activity requirement.

Who the RBC Advantage Banking Account for Newcomers May Be Well-Suited For

The package may be well-suited for newcomers who:

  • Want to open their bank account prior to arriving in Canada
  • Want to establish Canadian credit history quickly without needing a prior Canadian credit file
  • Prefer to consolidate everyday banking, credit, and savings at one institution during their first year
  • Will benefit from free international money transfers to send funds home or manage foreign accounts
  • Want in-person advisor support in their own language

The package may be less well-suited for newcomers who:

  • Already have an established Canadian credit file and qualify for a wider range of credit cards
  • Need a chequing account with free cheque writing — the RBC Advantage Banking Account does not include free cheques (the Signature No Limit account includes a first cheque book free)
  • Prefer a different credit card type, such as a travel rewards card (the Cash Back Mastercard earns cash back, not travel points)

CDIC Deposit Insurance

Deposits held with RBC Royal Bank — including both the Advantage Banking account and the High Interest Savings Account — are eligible for Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) coverage of up to $100,000 per insured category. CDIC protection is automatic and does not require registration.
