What Makes the RBC Advantage Account Different

The Advantage Banking account sits between the RBC Day to Day Banking account and the RBC Signature No Limit Banking account in RBC’s personal chequing lineup. The key differences:

  • vs. Day to Day Banking: Advantage includes unlimited debit transactions, which Day to Day Banking caps at a set number of monthly transactions.
  • vs. Signature No Limit: Advantage costs $4 less per month ($12.95 vs $16.95) but does not include a free first cheque book or free bank drafts. If you need cheques regularly, Signature No Limit may offset the price difference.

Free for Three Groups

The $0 monthly fee eligibility is the account’s strongest feature:

Full-time students — No monthly fee for the duration of full-time enrolment. RBC requires proof of student status and periodic renewal.

Anyone 24 or younger — No proof of enrolment required. The fee waiver applies automatically based on age and ends when you turn 25.

Newcomers to Canada — No monthly fee for the first year after arriving in Canada. RBC’s Newcomer Banking Package covers the Advantage account among other eligible accounts.

After your fee-free period ends, the Value Program (see below) is the primary lever for reducing the $12.95 standard fee.

The RBC Value Program — How to Reduce Your Monthly Fee

The Value Program grants monthly fee rebates based on the number of eligible RBC products you hold. For the Advantage Banking account, bundling enough RBC products can reduce your monthly fee to as low as $0.

To receive the Value Program rebate in a given month, you must also complete at least 2 of these 3 activities during that month:

  1. Have a pre-authorized payment processed from your account
  2. Receive a direct deposit into your account
  3. Make an eligible bill payment through RBC Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app

Eligible products that count toward the Value Program include RBC mortgages, eligible credit cards, investment accounts, and other qualifying RBC financial products. The more products you hold, the larger the monthly rebate — up to the full $12.95 fee.

📊
Avion Rewards: Once your account is enrolled in the RBC Value Program, you earn a minimum of 1 Avion Point per $10 spent on everyday debit purchases. Points are redeemable for travel, everyday essentials, and bill payments. Linking your RBC card to Petro-Canada, Triangle Rewards, and select other partners unlocks additional savings.

Fees in Detail

Cheques and Bank Drafts

The Advantage Banking account does not include free personalized cheques — fees apply when ordering. Bank drafts cost $9.95 each. If you write cheques regularly or frequently need certified funds, the cost can add up quickly:

Need Advantage Banking
First cheque book Fees apply
Bank drafts (per year) $9.95 each
Monthly fee $12.95
Annual cost (no drafts, no cheques) $155.40
Annual cost (6 bank drafts) $215.10

Figures use standard monthly fees before any Value Program rebate or fee waiver. Annual cost comparison assumes no other fees.

Overdraft Protection

Overdraft protection costs $5/month and must be set up in advance. Interest is charged on any negative balance at RBC’s standard overdraft interest rate. The protection amount is determined by RBC based on your credit history. Customers needing a higher overdraft limit may want to consider the RBC VIP Banking account, which offers up to $10,000 in overdraft protection.

ATM Fees

RBC waives its own surcharge when you use another Canadian bank’s ATM — you will not see an RBC fee on your statement. However, the ATM operator (the other bank) may still charge its own access fee, which RBC does not cover. To avoid all ATM fees, use RBC’s own network of ATMs.

Who the RBC Advantage Banking Account May Be Well-Suited For

The account may be well-suited for customers who:

  • Are full time students / age 24 and under and want a full-featured no-fee chequing account
  • Are newcomers to Canada in their first year looking for an accessible starting account
  • Want unlimited transactions without paying for Signature No Limit features (cheques, bank drafts) they don’t need
  • Already hold enough RBC products to qualify for a $0/month Value Program fee
  • Prefer to avoid ATM surcharges at non-RBC machines across Canada

The account may be less well-suited for customers who:

  • Regularly write personal cheques or order certified bank drafts
  • Need more than occasional overdraft coverage and want a guaranteed higher limit
  • Are looking for a credit card annual fee offset (the Advantage account does not include an annual credit card fee rebate)

Right Account Guarantee

RBC offers a Right Account Guarantee on the Advantage Banking account: if you are not completely satisfied within the first four months, RBC will refund your monthly fees for up to three months. This applies to the standard $12.95 fee — customers paying $0 (students, newcomers) would not receive a refund since no fees were charged.

CDIC Deposit Insurance

Deposits held with RBC Royal Bank are eligible for Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) coverage up to $100,000 per insured category. This covers chequing account balances in the event of a member institution failure. CDIC coverage is automatic — no registration required.
