Canadian banking uses transit numbers (5 digits, branch-specific) and institution numbers (3 digits, bank-specific) for all electronic payments. Electronic EFT routing format: 0[institution][transit] = 9 digits (a printed cheque’s MICR line reverses this order and omits the leading zero: transit + institution = 8 digits).
