Truist One Checking charges $12/month — waived with $500 in direct deposits or a $500 balance — and does not charge overdraft fees. This is confirmed directly in Truist’s official Personal Deposit Accounts Fee Schedule (effective September 28, 2026): the standard $36 Overdraft Fee explicitly does not apply to Truist One Checking, the Truist Confidence Account, or Truist Marquee Checking — Truist’s entire current personal checking lineup. Instead, Truist One Checking uses a $100 “Balance Buffer” that lets a qualifying account go up to $100 negative at no charge.

Correction note: earlier versions of this page incorrectly stated that Truist charges a $36 overdraft fee on One Checking. That fee exists in Truist’s schedule for other account types but is explicitly excluded for the accounts covered on this page. Corrected against Truist’s official fee schedule PDF, effective 09/28/2026.

Truist One Checking: The Flagship Account

One Checking is Truist’s primary consumer checking account, structured as a multi-level relationship account. The $12/month fee is waived by meeting any one of:

  • $500+ in monthly qualifying direct deposits (payroll, government benefits, pension)
  • $500+ combined balance across your Truist deposit and investment accounts
  • A related Truist credit card, mortgage, or consumer loan (including LightStream)
  • A linked Truist Small Business Checking account
  • Being a student, or under 25 or 62 and older

Most working adults easily meet the direct deposit waiver.

Overdraft policy — the Balance Buffer: Truist One Checking does not charge overdraft fees. Instead, qualifying accounts get a $100 Balance Buffer, letting the account go up to $100 negative without any charge. To qualify, the account must be open 35+ calendar days, be funded with a positive balance, and have received at least one direct deposit of $100 or more within the last 35 calendar days. Transactions that would take the balance more negative than $100 are typically declined or returned — not charged a fee. If Overdraft Protection (a linked savings account) is also set up, Truist uses the Balance Buffer first.

Standard features on One Checking:

  • Visa debit card
  • Zelle
  • Bill pay
  • Mobile check deposit
  • Access to Truist’s ATM network (concentrated in the Southeast)
  • One fee-free incoming domestic wire and one fee-free incoming international wire per calendar month

Truist Confidence Account

The Truist Confidence Account ($5/month, $25 minimum opening deposit) is Truist’s lower-cost checking option. The fee is waived by meeting any one of:

  • $500 or more in total deposits per statement cycle
  • 10 or more qualifying transactions per statement cycle
  • Being a student
  • Being under 25 or 62 and older

Like One Checking, the Confidence Account does not charge an overdraft fee — transactions that would overdraw the account are declined instead. It does not include check-writing.

Truist Marquee Checking

Truist Marquee Checking ($35/month, $100 minimum opening deposit, interest-bearing) is Truist’s premium account. The fee is automatically waived for the first 3 statement cycles; after that, it’s waived with a $250,000+ combined balance or by meeting Truist Wealth Relationship Requirements. Marquee Checking also waives non-Truist ATM fees (domestic and international), the 3% international transaction fee, and most wire and stop-payment fees.

ATM Access

Truist’s own ATM network has approximately 3,500 machines, concentrated in the Southeast. The non-Truist domestic ATM fee is $3.00 per transaction as of September 2026 (rising to $3.50 on November 9, 2026, per Truist’s published fee schedule); the non-Truist international ATM fee is $5.00. Marquee Checking customers pay no non-Truist ATM fee.

Truist’s proprietary ATM network is smaller than some competitors’ partner networks (e.g., PNC’s Allpoint access or U.S. Bank’s MoneyPass network). Customers who rely heavily on ATMs outside Truist’s footprint should factor this in.

Truist One Checking vs. Chase Total Checking

Feature Truist One Chase Total Checking

DD waiver threshold $500 $500
Overdraft fee None ($100 Balance Buffer) $34 (3/day max, $102)
ATMs ~3,500 branded 16,000+
Zelle Yes Yes

Truist has the lower monthly fee and — unlike Chase — charges no overdraft fee at all on its core account. Chase’s ATM network is far larger.
