Truist Bank’s core personal checking accounts do not charge overdraft fees. Truist One Checking is $12/month (waived with $500+ direct deposits, a $500+ balance, a linked Truist credit product, or an age/student waiver), and — per Truist’s official fee schedule effective September 28, 2026 — it is explicitly exempt from the standard $36 overdraft fee, using a $100 “Balance Buffer” instead. This is a significant differentiator from Chase, Wells Fargo, and U.S. Bank, all of which do charge per-item overdraft fees.

Correction note: earlier versions of this page stated Truist charges a $36 overdraft fee (up to 3/day, $108 max) on its standard checking account. That fee exists in Truist’s fee schedule but is explicitly listed as not applying to Truist One Checking, Truist Confidence Account, or Truist Marquee Checking — the entire current personal checking lineup. This page has been corrected accordingly (verified via Truist’s official fee schedule PDF, effective 09/28/2026).

Truist Monthly Maintenance Fees

Truist Checking Account Fees

Account Min. Opening Deposit Monthly Fee How to Waive
Truist One Checking $50 $12 $500+ direct deposits/cycle, OR $500+ combined balance across Truist accounts, OR a related Truist credit card/mortgage/consumer loan, OR a linked Small Business Checking account, OR primary client is a student, OR primary client is under 25 or 62+
Truist Confidence Account $25 $5 $500+ total deposits/cycle, OR 10+ qualifying transactions/cycle, OR primary client is a student, OR primary client is under 25 or 62+
Truist Marquee Checking $100 $35 Waived automatically for the first 3 statement cycles; after that, a $250,000+ combined balance OR meeting Truist Wealth Relationship Requirements

Truist One Checking is the flagship personal account, structured as a multi-level relationship account (Level 1 through Premier, based on combined balances). It is not interest-bearing.

Truist Confidence Account is Truist’s lower-cost, second-chance-friendly checking product. It is not interest-bearing and does not include check-writing capability.

Truist Marquee Checking is Truist’s premium interest-bearing account, aimed at higher-balance and Wealth Relationship clients. It waives non-Truist ATM fees (domestic and international), the 3% international transaction fee, and most wire fees.

Truist Savings Account Fees

Account Min. Opening Deposit Monthly Fee How to Waive
Truist One Savings $50 $5 $300+ minimum daily balance, OR a recurring $25+ internal transfer per cycle, OR owner under 18, OR linked to any Truist checking product
Truist Confidence Savings $25 $0 No monthly fee

Worked Example: What Truist Fees Cost Per Year

A customer with a $900 average checking balance who receives a $400 paycheck via direct deposit each month — just below the $500 direct-deposit and balance waiver thresholds — pays $12/month = $144/year in Truist One Checking maintenance fees, with no overdraft-fee exposure since the account doesn’t charge one.

The fix: route $500 of the paycheck to Truist checking each month, or maintain a $500 average balance. Either waives the $12 fee entirely.

Truist Overdraft Policy

Per Truist’s official fee schedule (effective September 28, 2026), the standard $36 Overdraft Fee (max 3 per day, $108 maximum, waived on shortfalls under $5) explicitly does not apply to Truist One Checking, Truist One Savings, Truist One Money Market, Truist Confidence Account, Truist Confidence Savings, Truist Marquee Checking, or Truist Wealth Money Market accounts — in other words, it does not apply to any of Truist’s current personal checking or savings products.

Truist One Checking’s overdraft mechanism — the Balance Buffer:

  • Lets a qualifying account go up to $100 negative with no fee
  • Eligibility: account open 35+ calendar days, funded with a positive balance, and at least one direct deposit of $100+ within the last 35 calendar days
  • Transactions that would take the balance more negative than the $100 buffer are typically declined or returned — not charged a fee
  • If you also have Overdraft Protection linked (e.g., a linked savings account), Truist uses the Balance Buffer first

Truist Confidence Account and Truist Marquee Checking similarly do not charge overdraft fees — transactions that would overdraw the account are declined instead.

There is no fee-free “Overdraft Protection Transfer” fee at Truist (the fee schedule lists it as “No Overdraft Protection Transfer fee”).

Truist ATM Fees

ATM Fee Amount
Truist ATM (withdrawal, balance inquiry, transfer) $0
Non-Truist domestic ATM fee $3.00/transaction (rising to $3.50 effective November 9, 2026)
Non-Truist international ATM fee $5.00/transaction
International POS/ATM/cash advance fee 3%
Truist Marquee Checking — non-Truist domestic/international ATM fee $0 (waived)
Truist Marquee Checking — international transaction fee $0 (waived)

Daily withdrawal limits also vary: $500/day for Truist One Checking Levels 1–2 and most other accounts, $2,500/day for Levels 3–4 and Premier, and $5,000/day for Marquee Checking. For more, see the Truist ATM limit guide.

Truist Wire Transfer Fees

Wire Type Fee
Incoming domestic wire $15.00 (Truist One Checking gets one fee-free incoming domestic wire per calendar month; free for Marquee Checking and Wealth Money Market)
Incoming international wire $20.00 (Truist One Checking gets one fee-free incoming international wire per calendar month; free for Marquee Checking and Wealth Money Market)
Incoming funds transfer $5.00
Outgoing domestic wire — online $20.00 (free for Marquee Checking and Wealth Money Market)
Outgoing domestic wire — branch/teammate-assisted $30.00 (free for Marquee Checking and Wealth Money Market)
Outgoing international wire — branch/teammate-assisted $65.00 (free for Marquee Checking and Wealth Money Market)
Outgoing book transfer — online $12.00
Outgoing book transfer — branch/teammate-assisted $5.00

Truist’s own fee schedule specifically corrects an earlier error on this site that conflated the $35 Stop Payment fee with the domestic outgoing wire fee. Outgoing domestic wires are $20 (online) or $30 (branch-assisted), not $35.

Truist Fees vs. Competitors

Fee Type Truist Chase BofA Capital One Ally
Monthly fee (standard checking) $12 $15 (Sept 2026) $12 $0 $0
Overdraft fee $0 (core accounts exempt) $34 $10 $0 $0
Out-of-network ATM $3.00 $3.00 $2.50 $0 $0 (reimbursed)
Wire (domestic out, online) $20 $25 $30 $30 $20

Truist’s lack of an overdraft fee on its core checking account is a genuine competitive advantage — most large traditional banks (Chase, U.S. Bank, and formerly Truist itself) still charge $34–$36 per overdraft item.

Is Truist Worth It?

Truist makes sense if you:

  • Live in the Southeast (Virginia to Florida to Texas)
  • Have existing BB&T or SunTrust relationships you’re continuing
  • Can meet the $500 direct deposit or balance waiver threshold
  • Want to avoid overdraft fees without opening a specialty no-overdraft account elsewhere
  • Already have a Truist mortgage, auto loan, or credit card

Consider alternatives if you:

  • Want no monthly fees without conditions — Capital One 360 or Ally Checking
  • Travel frequently outside the Southeast — limited ATM fee reimbursement outside Marquee Checking
  • Want a higher savings rate — online banks consistently outpay Truist
