The formula

Annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year

Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year)

A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, so the quick versions are: multiply an hourly rate by 2,080, or divide a salary by 2,080. All figures on this page are gross pay, before taxes and deductions.

When you work fewer or more hours

The 2,080-hour year assumes full-time hours every week of the year. Part-time schedules and unpaid weeks change the answer, which is why the calculator lets you set both.

Hours per week Hours per year (52 weeks) Salary at $20/hour Salary at $25/hour
20 1,040 $20,800 $26,000
25 1,300 $26,000 $32,500
30 1,560 $31,200 $39,000
32 1,664 $33,280 $41,600
35 1,820 $36,400 $45,500
37.5 1,950 $39,000 $48,750
40 2,080 $41,600 $52,000
45 2,340 $46,800 $58,500
50 2,600 $52,000 $65,000

To convert a salary to an hourly rate when you are paid for fewer weeks, divide by the hours you actually work. A $50,000 salary over 50 weeks at 40 hours is $50,000 ÷ 2,000 = $25.00 an hour, compared with $24.04 over a full 52 weeks.

Overtime

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, employees who are not exempt must be paid at least time and one-half their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. The conversions above use straight-time hours only; the overtime calculator adds overtime on top.

Comparing an hourly job with a salaried job

The hourly rate is only part of the comparison. Hourly roles are usually eligible for overtime, while many salaried roles are exempt from it, and paid time off, health coverage and retirement matching can differ a great deal between two offers with the same headline pay. Convert both offers to the same period first, then compare the benefits line by line.
