Your mobile deposit is accepted, but the funds aren’t immediately available. Here is exactly how long holds last — and what determines the schedule — in 2026.

Federal Funds Availability Rules (Regulation CC)

Regulation CC is the federal law governing how quickly banks must release deposited funds. All banks must follow these minimum standards:

Check Type First $225 Next $5,075 (up to $5,300 total) Remainder
All checks Next business day 2nd business day 5th business day
Cashier’s, certified, government Next business day Next business day Next business day
On-us (same bank) Next business day Next business day
Deposits over $5,525 Next business day 2nd business day 7th business day

Most banks make $225 available the same business day, even though the law allows them to wait until the next. This is at each bank’s discretion.

How to Avoid Holds on Mobile Deposits

Strategy Benefit
Use cashier’s or certified checks Must be available by next business day (no extended hold allowed)
Request a wire transfer instead of a check Wires are immediately available, no holds
Ask the sender to use Zelle or ACH Electronic transfers clear faster than checks
Build account history Reduces likelihood of extended holds
Deposit at a branch teller Tellers can override holds in some cases for known customers
