ETRADE (now owned by Morgan Stanley) allows day trading in margin-enabled accounts with the standard FINRA Pattern Day Trader (PDT) rule: make 4 or more day trades in a 5-business-day window and you must maintain $25,000 in equity at all times. ETRADE’s primary day trading platform is Power E*TRADE, a browser-based tool with streaming quotes, Level 2 data, and the Snapshot Analysis options tool. Margin rates run from 8.95% to 12.70% in 2026.

Power E*TRADE: The Day Trading Platform

Power ETRADE is a browser-based platform — no download required — and is free for all ETRADE customers. It is E*TRADE’s main active trading interface.

Snapshot Analysis is E*TRADE’s standout feature for options day traders. It shows an instant visual representation of how an options position performs across different price scenarios — useful for quickly evaluating strategy risk/reward before entry.

E*TRADE Pro is a downloadable desktop platform available to customers who execute 30 or more trades per quarter. It adds additional Level 2 data, faster order routing, and advanced charting. Most retail day traders will use Power E*TRADE.

The PDT Rule at E*TRADE

E*TRADE enforces FINRA’s Pattern Day Trader rule:

Situation Result
Under 4 day trades in 5 business days No PDT status — trade freely
4+ day trades in 5 business days PDT flagged
PDT with $25,000+ equity Unrestricted day trading
PDT with under $25,000 equity Account restricted to closing trades
Equity drops below $25,000 during PDT Restricted until balance restored

Worked Example

Maria has a $28,000 ETRADE margin account. On Monday she buys and sells META (1 day trade). On Tuesday she day trades AMZN and NVDA (2 day trades). On Wednesday she day trades AAPL (1 day trade). Four day trades in five days — Maria is flagged as a PDT. Her account is above $25,000 so trading continues normally. If a market downturn drops her balance to $23,500, ETRADE restricts her until she deposits enough to clear $25,000.

Margin and Intraday Buying Power

E*TRADE grants pattern day traders 4:1 intraday buying power:

Account Equity Day Trading BP (4:1) Overnight BP (2:1)
$25,000 $100,000 $50,000
$50,000 $200,000 $100,000
$100,000 $400,000 $200,000

E*TRADE Margin Rates (2026)

Debit Balance Annual Rate
Under $10,000 ~12.70%
$10,000–$24,999 ~12.20%
$25,000–$49,999 ~11.45%
$50,000–$99,999 ~10.45%

$250,000–$499,999 ~9.45%
Over $1,000,000 ~8.95%

E*TRADE’s margin rates are slightly higher than Fidelity at the lower tiers but become more competitive at $250,000+. Day traders who close all positions by 4 p.m. ET pay no overnight margin interest.

How to Enable Day Trading at E*TRADE

  1. Open an E*TRADE brokerage account — etrade.com
  2. Apply for margin — available in account settings; $2,000 minimum; $25,000 required for PDT status
  3. Access Power E*TRADE — available at us.etrade.com/etx/pxy/dashboard (browser, no download)
  4. Apply for options — Level 1–5, depending on experience and account size
  5. Review E*TRADE’s margin agreement — understand maintenance requirements and call procedures

Day Trading Risks

Studies show that the large majority of retail day traders lose money over time. Leverage amplifies both profits and losses — at 4:1 margin, a 25% adverse price move wipes out your entire position. E*TRADE provides educational tools through its Knowledge section, but no platform substitutes for discipline and risk management. Never risk more than you can afford to lose, and define your maximum daily loss limit before each trading session.
