Why Limits and Hold Times Exist

Mobile cheque deposit limits and hold periods exist for two reasons: fraud prevention and settlement risk. When you photograph a cheque and submit it, Simplii doesn’t receive the actual funds immediately — it takes 1–3 business days for the cheque to clear through the Canadian payment system.

The first $100 available immediately is a requirement under the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) rules that apply to all Canadian banks. The remaining hold protects Simplii (and you) in case a cheque is returned for insufficient funds or suspected fraud.

Longer holds on larger personal cheques reflect higher risk. A $500 payroll cheque from a known employer clears faster than a $5,000 personal cheque from a new contact.

How to Deposit a Cheque via the Simplii App

  1. Open the Simplii Financial app and log in
  2. Tap Deposit a Cheque
  3. Select your chequing or savings account
  4. Enter the exact amount written on the cheque
  5. Sign the back of the cheque — write your signature plus “For Simplii mobile deposit only
  6. Photograph the front (flat surface, good light, all 4 corners in frame, no shadows)
  7. Photograph the back (endorsement fully visible)
  8. Review and tap Submit
  9. Note your confirmation number, then write “Deposited [date]” on the cheque

Keep the physical cheque in a safe place for 90 days after depositing. Then shred it. Never deposit it again — double-depositing the same cheque is cheque fraud.

What to Do If You Hit the Limit or Need Faster Access

Simplii is branchless — there are no Simplii locations to visit for over-limit deposits. Your options:

If you’ve hit the daily or 30-day limit:

  • Call Simplii at 1-888-723-8881 to request a limit increase (may require account history review)
  • Wait until the next business day for the daily limit to reset
  • For very large cheques over the 30-day limit, ask the issuer for an EFT or wire instead

If you need funds faster than the hold period:

  • Request a certified cheque from the issuer — certified cheques clear the next business day
  • Ask the payer to send an Interac e-Transfer instead — arrives in minutes with no hold

Note on CIBC branches: Since Simplii uses CIBC’s banking infrastructure, in some cases Simplii customers can visit a CIBC branch for assistance. Call Simplii first to confirm what CIBC can do for your specific situation.

Tips for Smooth Mobile Deposits

  1. Endorse before photographing — the app may reject the deposit if the back isn’t signed
  2. Use natural light — flash can cause glare that blurs cheque details
  3. Lay the cheque flat — curling edges can cut off corners in the photo
  4. Double-check the amount — entering $1,500 when the cheque says $150 will cause a rejection
  5. Deposit early in the business day — cheques submitted before noon often process faster
