Monthly Fee: $0 — What’s the Catch?

There is no monthly fee for eligible students as well as no minimum balance requirement, no transaction threshold, and no bundled product requirement. The account is simply free while you qualify.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Full-time student status and/or age 24 and younger
  • Age 13 or older (14 or older in Quebec)
  • Valid government-issued photo ID

The “and/or” is notable: you qualify if you are a full-time student regardless of age (up to 24), or if you are 24 and under regardless of full-time student status. Part-time students aged 25+ would generally not qualify.

To be considered a full time student you must attend a primary or secondary school, OR be enrolled in a program at a post secondary level at a college, university or other educational institution (whether in Canada or not). If you are a post-secondary student you must take at least 60% of the usual course load for the program in which you are enrolled in any particular semester. Proof of enrollment may be requested.

Features Breakdown

Unlimited Debit Transactions

All debit card purchases such as tapping for coffee, groceries, transit, textbooks, dining out are included without a per-transaction fee and without a monthly cap. This is a significant advantage over entry-level adult accounts like the RBC Day to Day Banking Account, which limits you to 12 debit transactions per month ($1.25 each beyond that).

Free Interac e-Transfers

Unlimited debit transactions and e-Transfers are included with no per-transfer charge. For students splitting rent with roommates, repaying friends for shared expenses, or receiving money from family, e-Transfers are typically the most-used feature of a chequing account.

Credit Card Annual Fee Rebate (Up to $48/year)

Eligible student account holders receive up to $48 off the annual fee of an eligible RBC credit card specifically highlighted for the RBC ION+ Visa. For students who hold a credit card with a $48 annual fee, this rebate effectively makes the card free while you maintain the student account. The rebate is delivered through the RBC Value Program.

This is an uncommon benefit for a $0/month student account. Competitor student accounts at TD, CIBC, Scotiabank, and BMO typically do not include an automatic credit card fee rebate.

Virtual Visa Debit for Online Purchases

The account includes a Virtual Visa Debit, which lets you use your RBC debit card for online purchases at any merchant accepting Visa. The purchase is debited directly from your chequing account in real time which is useful for students buying textbooks, subscribing to streaming services, or paying for course materials without a credit card.

Avion Points on Debit Spending

When enrolled in the RBC Value Program, the account earns a minimum of 1 Avion Point per $10 spent on everyday debit purchases. Points can be redeemed for travel, merchandise, gift cards, bill payments, or savings contributions. Linking the account to Petro-Canada also saves 3¢/L on fuel.

For students, the travel redemption option is commonly used for flights home or during reading week.

No Minimum Balance

There is no minimum daily or monthly balance requirement. The account is free regardless of how much or how little you keep in it which is important for students managing tight budgets between scholarships, part-time work income, and OSAP or student loan deposits.

Who This Account May Be Well-Suited For

  • Full-time students aged 13–24 looking for a no-fee account with unlimited transactions and free e-Transfers are the most common profile this account is designed for.
  • Students who use ATMs on campus or near their university, where ATMs may be non-RBC branded the free non-RBC ATM withdrawal benefit directly removes an otherwise common expense.
  • Students who hold or plan to open an RBC credit card — the up-to-$48 annual fee rebate effectively offsets the cost of an entry-level RBC travel or cashback card.
  • Students who manage money primarily on mobile — the account integrates with the RBC Mobile App and includes all standard digital banking features.

Who This Account May Not Be Well-Suited For

  • Part time students — this offer is only eligible for full time students. If you are a post-secondary student, you must take at least 60% of the usual course load for the program in which you are enrolled.
  • Students who want to earn interest on their balance — the account does not pay interest on deposits. Pairing it with an RBC savings account, or considering an EQ Bank account for savings, is worth exploring if growing your balance matters.
  • Students near the end of their program who want account stability past graduation and plan ahead for the transition to a standard account once eligibility ends.
