You can track a Western Union transfer in real time using the MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number). The MTCN is the 10-digit number on your confirmation email or app receipt. Enter it at westernunion.com/track or in the WU app to see the current status of your transfer.
How to Track Your Western Union Transfer
Method 1: Online
- Go to westernunion.com
- Click “Track a Transfer” in the top navigation
- Enter your MTCN (10-digit number)
- View real-time transfer status
Method 2: WU App
- Open the Western Union app
- Tap “Track” from the home screen
- Enter your MTCN or view your transfer history (for logged-in users)
Method 3: Phone
- Call Western Union at 1-800-325-6000
- Have your MTCN and the sender’s name ready
Method 4: Receipt number If you sent in-store, the agent receipt includes a reference number. You can track using either the MTCN or that reference number.
What Each Transfer Status Means
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| In Progress | Transfer is being processed; ACH may still be clearing |
| Available for Pickup | Recipient can collect cash now at a WU agent location |
| Sent to Bank | Funds have been sent to the recipient’s bank; delivery depends on their bank |
| Paid / Completed | Cash has been picked up or bank deposit confirmed |
| Canceled | Transfer was canceled before completion |
| Refunded | Funds returned to sender (after cancellation or failed delivery) |
How Long Does Each Status Take?
| Send method | Receive method | Typical time to “Available” |
|---|---|---|
| Debit card | Cash pickup | Often within minutes |
| Debit card | Bank deposit | Roughly 1–3 business days |
| Bank account (ACH) | Cash pickup | Roughly 1–3 business days (ACH must clear first) |
| Bank account (ACH) | Bank deposit | Roughly 3–5 business days |
| Cash in-store | Cash pickup | Often within minutes |
Timelines are general estimates and vary by corridor, destination banking system, and Western Union’s own processing at the time — confirm expected delivery in the app for your specific transfer.
Sharing the MTCN with Your Recipient
Once your transfer shows “Available for Pickup,” share the MTCN with your recipient. They will need:
- The MTCN number
- Their government-issued photo ID
- Their full legal name (must match what you entered when sending)
Important: Only share the MTCN with the intended recipient. Scammers who obtain an MTCN may attempt to pick up the cash at a different agent location before the intended recipient does. If you believe your MTCN has been compromised, contact Western Union immediately at 1-800-325-6000.
How Long Is a Transfer Valid?
Western Union may cancel an uncollected cash-pickup transfer after a period of inactivity and refund the sender (minus any applicable fees), but we could not independently confirm a specific number of days for this review — confirm the current policy for your transfer at westernunion.com or by calling 1-800-325-6000 rather than assuming a fixed window. Bank deposit transfers do not have this kind of expiration — funds are pushed to the bank account directly.
What to Do If Your Transfer Is Stuck
If your transfer remains “In Progress” longer than expected:
- Check the expected delivery time for your send/receive method combination
- If ACH-funded, allow a few full business days before contacting support
- If still not updating, contact WU at 1-800-325-6000 with your MTCN ready
- If the transfer has failed, WU will initiate a refund — confirm the expected timeframe with support, as it can vary
Canceling a Transfer
You can cancel a transfer that has not yet been picked up or deposited:
- Online: Log in to westernunion.com → My Account → Transfer History → Cancel
- App: Transfer History → tap the transfer → Cancel
- Phone: 1-800-325-6000
Refund timing to your original payment method varies — confirm the current estimate with Western Union support when you cancel.
