Apple Cash (formerly Apple Pay Cash) is Apple’s built-in P2P payment feature that lets iPhone users send and receive money inside iMessage — no separate app required. Funds live on a virtual Apple Cash card in your Apple Wallet and are FDIC insured through Green Dot Bank. Unverified users can send up to $200 per week; verified users up to $10,000 per message. How Apple Cash Works

Apple Cash is set up in the Wallet app on any iPhone running iOS 11.2 or later. Once enabled, a virtual Apple Cash card appears in your Wallet. You send and receive money directly in iMessage conversations.

To send money:

  1. Open a conversation in iMessage
  2. Tap the “+” icon → select Apple Cash (or use the dedicated Apple Cash button if it appears)
  3. Type or tap the amount
  4. Tap Pay → authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode

To receive money: When someone sends you Apple Cash, you receive a message. Tap “Accept” — funds go to your Apple Cash card balance instantly.

To transfer to your bank:

  1. Open Wallet → tap your Apple Cash card
  2. Tap the “…” menu → Transfer to Bank
  3. Choose your linked bank, enter amount, select standard (free) or instant (1.5%)

Worked example: Your roommate owes you $150 for utilities. They open iMessage, send you $150 via Apple Cash. It appears in your Wallet instantly. You can spend it with your Apple Cash card at any Apple Pay merchant, or transfer it to your bank free within 1–3 business days.

How to verify: Open Wallet → tap Apple Cash card → tap the more button (…) → Verify Identity. You’ll need to provide your full name, date of birth, address, and SSN. Verification typically takes a few minutes.

Apple Cash vs Venmo vs Zelle

Apple Cash is the most seamless option if everyone in your group is on iPhone — money moves without leaving iMessage. For cross-platform payments (iPhone to Android), Venmo or Zelle is better. For the largest free instant transfers, Zelle wins.

FDIC Insurance: Apple Cash vs Other Apps

This is one of Apple Cash’s clearest advantages. Unlike default Venmo or PayPal balances, Apple Cash balances are directly FDIC insured through Green Dot Bank (up to $250,000) without any additional enrollment required.

App FDIC Insured? Condition
Apple Cash ✅ Yes Always (Green Dot Bank)
Cash App ✅ Yes Must have Cash Card enabled
Venmo Conditional Only with Debit Card / banking features
PayPal Conditional Only with FDIC sweep program enrollment
Zelle N/A Money stays in your FDIC-insured bank

Apple Cash Family

Apple allows parents to set up Apple Cash for children under 13 through Family Sharing. With Apple Cash Family:

  • Parents can see their child’s transactions
  • Parents approve or block individual payments
  • Children can only spend their Apple Cash balance (no bank withdrawals)

This makes Apple Cash a practical first digital payment tool for teenagers under parental supervision.

Bottom Line

Apple Cash is the best P2P option for households that are 100% on iPhone — it’s FDIC insured, requires no separate app, and works at the speed of a text message. If you’re sending to Android users, you’ll need Venmo, Cash App, or Zelle. For the full picture of which payment app fits your situation, see the best ways to send money guide.
