Most Navy Federal checking accounts have no minimum balance requirement and no monthly fee. Free EveryDay Checking, Free Active Duty Checking, and Free Campus Checking are permanently fee-free regardless of balance. The exception is Flagship Checking, which carries an $8 monthly fee waived with a $1,500 average daily balance or any qualifying direct deposit. All Navy Federal members must maintain $5 in a Share Savings account as a membership requirement.

Free Checking Accounts
Navy Federal offers three permanently fee-free checking accounts. Free EveryDay Checking is available to all members with no balance requirement and no monthly fee. Free Active Duty Checking is designed for service members on active duty and includes no fees and no minimum. Free Campus Checking serves students aged 14 to 24 with the same no-fee, no-minimum structure.
For most Navy Federal members, one of these three accounts is the appropriate starting point. There is no reason to pay the $8 Flagship Checking fee unless the account benefits, such as higher ATM reimbursements, justify it for a specific situation.
Flagship Checking
Flagship Checking charges $8 per month, waived by maintaining a $1,500 average daily balance or by receiving any qualifying direct deposit. Unlike most big bank checking accounts that use minimum daily balance, Navy Federal uses average daily balance for Flagship Checking. This means a temporary dip below $1,500 caused by a large payment does not automatically trigger the fee, as long as the average for the full statement period stays at or above $1,500.
The direct deposit waiver covers any recurring direct deposit, including military pay, federal civilian pay, Social Security, or any employer payroll deposit. Most Navy Federal members with regular employment or military pay satisfy this condition automatically.
Share Savings Account
Every Navy Federal member must maintain a Share Savings account with at least $5 as a condition of membership. This $5 balance is not a fee; it is the member’s ownership stake in the credit union. Beyond this $5 minimum, no ongoing minimum balance is required in the Share Savings account. There is no monthly fee on the Share Savings account.
How Navy Federal Compares to Banks With Minimums
Navy Federal’s structure is fundamentally different from traditional banks because the majority of its checking accounts carry no fee and no minimum at all. At Chase, the standard checking account charges $12 per month unless you maintain $1,500 or qualify through direct deposit. At Wells Fargo, the fee is $10. Navy Federal members in eligible accounts pay nothing regardless of balance.
