Google Wallet (formerly Google Pay) is Google’s tap-to-pay and digital card storage app for Android — it no longer supports sending money to other people in the United States. Google discontinued US peer-to-peer (P2P) money transfers on June 4, 2024. As of September 16, 2026, Google’s own official feature list for Google Wallet in the US (wallet.google.com) covers tap-to-pay, transit cards, loyalty cards, tickets, digital car keys, and vaccination records — not P2P transfers. If you’re looking to send money to a friend, use Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, or PayPal instead.

How Google Wallet Works Today

Google Wallet handles:

  • Tap-to-pay in stores (Android only) — hold your phone near an NFC terminal to pay with a stored card
  • Online checkout — the “Google Pay” button at participating merchants uses your saved Wallet cards
  • Digital card and pass storage — credit/debit cards, loyalty cards, boarding passes, event tickets, transit cards, and (in select states) a digital driver’s license

It does not currently support P2P money transfers, cryptocurrency, direct deposit, or a savings account in the US.

What Happened to Google Pay P2P Transfers?

Google shut down peer-to-peer money transfers in the US Google Pay app on June 4, 2024. Any remaining balances were automatically refunded to users’ linked accounts. Google cited the competitive market for P2P payment apps and pointed users toward alternatives like Zelle, Venmo, and PayPal. See Google Wallet vs Google Pay: What Changed for the full timeline.
