Chase Total Checking is Chase’s standard consumer checking account. The $15 monthly fee is waived for most working adults who have their pay deposited electronically — making it effectively free while providing access to more than 14,000 ATMs and about 5,000 branches.
The simplest fee waiver: receive $500 or more in qualifying electronic deposits (such as payroll by direct deposit) each statement period. Zelle, cash, checks and wires don’t count.

The Four Ways to Waive the $15 Fee
Option 1: Electronic Deposits ($500+ per statement period) — Easiest Have $500 or more in qualifying electronic deposits in a statement period. Payments from an employer or government, made by ACH and similar networks, count. A single $500 deposit is enough — you don’t need $500 every week.
Option 2: Daily Balance ($1,500) Have a balance of $1,500 or more at the beginning of each day. This is harder to maintain reliably than electronic deposits.
Option 3: Average Balance ($5,000) Keep an average beginning day balance of $5,000 or more in this account, or in combination with any linked qualifying personal deposits or investments. Less practical for most customers without significant saved assets.
Option 4: Linked Checking Account Link the account to a qualifying checking account.
Chase Total Checking vs. Other Chase Accounts
| Account | Monthly Fee | Fee Waiver | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total Checking | $15 | $500 electronic deposits or $1,500 balance | Most customers |
| Secure Banking | $4.95 | $250+ electronic deposits, a linked qualifying checking account, or account owner age 17-24 | People who frequently overdraft |
| Premier Plus Checking | $25 | $15,000 balance, linked qualifying checking, linked Chase mortgage, or servicemember/veteran | High-balance customers |
| Sapphire Banking (no longer for sale) | $25 | $75,000+ average beginning day balance, or a linked qualifying checking account | Existing customers only |
Chase Secure Banking is worth noting: it’s a $4.95/month account with no overdraft fees and no minimum balance — transactions are declined if funds are insufficient. For customers who struggle with overdrafts, the predictable $4.95 monthly cost beats unpredictable $34 overdraft fees.
Overdraft Policy on Total Checking
Chase’s overdraft policy has several tiers:
- No fee: If you’re overdrawn by $50 or less at the end of the business day (Chase Overdraft Assist)
- $34 fee: Per item when the balance is overdrawn by more than $50
- Maximum per day: 3 fees ($102)
- Grace period: Until 11 p.m. ET (8 p.m. PT) the next business day to bring the balance to overdrawn by $50 or less
Setting up overdraft protection via a linked Chase savings account transfers funds automatically at no charge — avoiding the $34 fee entirely.
See the full Chase overdraft policy for details.
