There are 11 federal bank holidays each year. On each of these dates, the Federal Reserve suspends payment processing — no ACH transfers settle, no wire transfers clear, and bank branches close nationwide. ATMs, mobile banking, and online banking remain available throughout, but anything requiring the Federal Reserve’s settlement network waits until the next business day.

The Federal Reserve Bank Services publishes the official holiday schedule through 2030. The dates below come directly from that source.

Federal Reserve Holiday Schedule 2026–2030

This multi-year table lets you identify banking closures years in advance — useful for mortgage closings, payroll planning, and any time-sensitive transfers. All dates are sourced from the Federal Reserve Bank Services official holiday schedule.

‡ Falls on Sunday — All Federal Reserve offices closed the following Monday. This creates a genuine extra non-processing day.

Key years to watch:

  • 2027: Both Juneteenth (Jun 19, Sat) and Christmas (Dec 25, Sat) fall on Saturdays — no extra ACH disruption. But Independence Day (Jul 4, Sun) is observed Monday July 5 — ACH pauses Monday.
  • 2028: New Year’s Day (Jan 1, Sat), Juneteenth (Jun 19, Mon), Veterans Day (Nov 11, Sat) — significant Monday MLK/Presidents/Memorial/Labor/Columbus holidays cluster with minor Saturday exceptions.
  • 2029: Veterans Day falls on Sunday November 11 — observed Monday November 12. The only Sunday holiday that year.
  • 2030: All 11 holidays fall on weekdays or are handled by the standard substitution rules.

Saturday vs. Sunday Holidays: A Critical Difference

Not all weekend holidays are equal. How a holiday falls on the weekend determines whether an extra business day is lost.

Holiday Falls On Federal Reserve Rule ACH Impact
Saturday Fed Banks/Branches open preceding Friday No extra ACH day lost — only normal weekend gap
Sunday All Federal Reserve offices closed following Monday One extra business day lost

Practical example (2026 vs 2027 Independence Day):

  • 2026: July 4 is Saturday. Fed Banks open Friday July 3. ACH has only the standard Fri-night to Sun-evening gap — identical to any normal weekend. Commercial branches often close Friday as a courtesy.
  • 2027: July 4 is Sunday. All Fed offices closed Monday July 5. ACH pauses from Friday July 4 evening through Monday July 7 evening — a genuine 3-day processing gap.

A Sunday holiday always creates more disruption than a Saturday holiday. When planning time-sensitive transfers, check whether the holiday falls on Saturday or Sunday before adjusting your schedule.

FedACH Processing Cutoffs — 2026

FedACH is the Federal Reserve’s ACH network that processes direct deposits and electronic bill payments. The table below shows the exact processing windows for each 2026 holiday, sourced from the Federal Reserve Bank Services.

Christmas Day (Dec 25, Fri) Dec 24, 2026, 11:30 PM ET Dec 27, 2026, 5:30 PM ET

Third file delivery begins at 8:15 PM ET on days processing resumes.

What these times mean for you:

  • Monday holidays (MLK, Presidents, Memorial, Labor, Columbus): Processing ends early Saturday morning (3 AM ET), giving the Fed time to close for the three-day weekend. Submit any critical ACH files by Friday afternoon.
  • Mid-week holidays (Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve): Processing ends the evening before the holiday. Resumes the same holiday evening, so next-day business is not further delayed.
  • Friday holidays (Juneteenth, Christmas 2026): Processing ends Thursday night. With the weekend immediately following, ACH resumes Sunday evening — a Thu–Sun gap.
  • Saturday holidays (Independence Day 2026): Processing ends Friday night — same as any normal weekend. No extra disruption.

How Bank Holidays Affect Your Finances

Direct Deposits

Payroll processors submit ACH files to the Fed one to two business days before your scheduled payday. If your payday falls on a bank holiday, the ACH network cannot settle the payment, so payroll must be submitted earlier.

In practice, most employers process payroll one day early during holiday weeks. You’ll typically see your deposit on Wednesday if your normal Thursday payday is Thanksgiving, or on Friday if your Monday payday is Labor Day.

Worked example: Your rent is $1,800 due on the 11th of each month. In November 2026, the 11th is Veterans Day — a federal bank holiday. Your landlord’s bank cannot receive an ACH payment on that date. If you schedule a bank transfer for the 11th, it will process on the 12th instead. To avoid any risk of a late payment notice, schedule the transfer for November 10th.

Normal Pay Date If on Holiday You’ll Receive
Thursday (Thanksgiving) Holiday Wednesday before
Friday (Christmas 2026) Holiday Thursday before
Monday (Labor Day) Holiday Friday before

For a deeper look at how each individual holiday affects payroll and transfers, see the guides for MLK Day, Presidents Day, and Columbus Day.

Bill Payments

Scheduled bill payments via ACH face the same delay as direct deposits. Most major lenders recognize holiday delays and do not assess late fees, but verify this with your specific lender for any payment that falls close to the end of a grace period. When in doubt, schedule the payment a day early.

Transfers Between Banks

Wire transfers do not process at all on federal holidays. If you need to send a time-critical wire — closing costs for a home purchase, a large business payment — make sure it is sent and confirmed by 5 PM on the last business day before the holiday. Banks typically cut off same-day wires at 3–4 PM.

Transfer Type Holiday Impact
ACH (standard) Adds 1+ business day
Wire transfer Not processed
Same-bank transfer Usually immediate
Zelle / instant Usually works

Planning Around Bank Holidays

Before Long Weekends

  1. Review scheduled payments two to three days before the holiday for anything due during the gap
  2. Withdraw any cash you might need — ATMs always work but can run low at tourist areas
  3. Initiate bank-to-bank transfers at least two business days before a critical deadline
  4. Send time-sensitive wires by 5 PM (or earlier, per your bank’s cutoff) on the last business day

Remaining 2026 Banking Gaps

Period Days Without Fed Processing
Labor Day Weekend Sat–Mon (3 days)
Columbus Day Weekend Sat–Mon (3 days)
Veterans Day Wednesday only
Thanksgiving Thu–Sun (4 days)
Christmas–New Year Fri Dec 25 → Sun Dec 27 (3 days), then Fri Jan 1, 2027

Holiday Weekends Requiring Extra Planning

Thanksgiving 2026 and 2027

Thanksgiving creates the longest single-holiday banking gap of the year — Thursday through Sunday — and it falls in a month when many people face major financial obligations: end-of-month rent, mortgage payments, and holiday spending.

The day after Thanksgiving is not a federal holiday. Most banks open with normal or near-normal hours on Black Friday. See the day after Thanksgiving banking guide for branch-by-branch details.

Thanksgiving 2026 (November 26):

Date Day Banks
Wed, Nov 25 Last business day Open
Thu, Nov 26 Thanksgiving Closed
Fri, Nov 27 Day after Thanksgiving Open (some close early)
Sat–Sun Weekend Closed
Mon, Nov 30 Next full business day Open

Christmas/New Year 2026–2027

Christmas 2026 falls on Friday, and New Year’s Day 2027 also falls on Friday — two separate bank-closure Fridays within one week. Aim to complete all year-end financial transactions by December 23rd.

Date Day Banks
Tue, Dec 22 3 days before — safe wire deadline Open
Wed, Dec 23 Last safe day for year-end transfers Open
Thu, Dec 24 Christmas Eve Open (many close early)
Fri, Dec 25 Christmas Day Closed
Sat–Sun Weekend Closed
Mon, Dec 28 First full business day after Christmas Open
Tue–Thu, Dec 29–31 Year-end window Open
Fri, Jan 1, 2027 New Year’s Day Closed
Mon, Jan 4, 2027 Normal business resumes Open

Stock Market vs. Bank Holidays

Columbus Day and Veterans Day are bank holidays but not stock market holidays — markets trade a full session while banks are closed. Good Friday reverses this: markets close, banks stay open.

If you plan to trade on Columbus Day or Veterans Day, fund your brokerage account by the Thursday before. Any capital you need must already be inside your brokerage, since you cannot wire funds from a closed bank.

2026 Bank vs. Market

International Considerations

If you send or receive international wire transfers, track two holiday calendars simultaneously: the US Federal Reserve schedule and the receiving country’s central banking holidays. A transfer to a UK bank account around Christmas can face delays from both US Christmas (December 25) and UK Boxing Day (December 26).

Give international wires at least three to five business days of buffer around any major holiday in either country.

Country Notable Different Holidays
Canada Thanksgiving in October, Boxing Day
UK Bank holidays differ significantly
Mexico Many unique holidays
Europe Varies by country
