American Express supports mobile check deposit into its High Yield Savings Account, with a $5,000 daily limit, a $10,000 rolling 30-day cap, and a 5:00 PM ET cutoff time. Most standard checks clear by the next business day. Here is everything you need to know for 2026.

Mobile Deposit Limits at a Glance

Limit type Amount
Daily deposit limit $5,000
30-day rolling limit $10,000
Single check limit $5,000
Cutoff time 5:00 PM ET
Immediate availability $225 (all check types)

These are standard limits for established accounts. New accounts (open less than 30 days) face stricter availability holds — see the Fund Availability section below.

Fund Availability: When Will Your Money Be Ready?

How fast your deposit clears depends on the check type and how long your account has been open. Under federal Regulation CC, the first $225 of every deposit is available immediately — no exceptions.

Check type Immediate Full availability
Standard personal check $225 Next business day
Payroll / government check $225 Next business day
Cashier’s or certified check $225 Next business day
Large check (over $5,525) $225 2nd business day
New account (first 30 days) $225 5–7 business days

Worked Example: Depositing a $3,000 Payroll Check

You submit a $3,000 payroll check via the AmEx app at 3:30 PM ET on a Tuesday.

  • $225 is available immediately — within minutes of submission
  • The remaining $2,775 is available on Wednesday morning (next business day)
  • The deposit counts against your $5,000 daily limit for Tuesday
  • Your 30-day rolling limit drops from $10,000 to $7,000

If you had submitted the same check at 6:00 PM ET on Tuesday — after the 5:00 PM cutoff — Wednesday becomes your processing day and Thursday becomes your full-availability day.

How to Deposit a Check via the American Express App

  1. Download the American Express app (iOS or Android) and log in
  2. Tap your High Yield Savings account
  3. Tap Deposit a Check
  4. Select the account (HYSA or CD if applicable)
  5. Enter the check amount
  6. Photograph the front — place the check flat on a dark, well-lit surface
  7. Sign the back: write “For AmEx Mobile Deposit Only” and add your signature below
  8. Photograph the back
  9. Review the details and tap Submit
  10. Keep the original check for 60 days before shredding

Common reasons a deposit is rejected:

  • Blurry or poorly lit photo (reshoot in natural light)
  • Missing or incorrect restrictive endorsement on the back
  • Check is post-dated or more than 6 months old
  • Check already deposited elsewhere (duplicate check detection)
  • Amount exceeds your daily or 30-day limit

The 5:00 PM ET Cutoff — What It Really Means

American Express processes mobile deposits in a single daily batch at 5:00 PM Eastern Time on business days.

When you submit Processing day Full availability
Before 5:00 PM ET, Mon–Fri Same business day Next business day
After 5:00 PM ET, Mon–Thu Next business day Day after next
Friday after 5:00 PM ET Following Monday Tuesday
Saturday or Sunday Following Monday Tuesday
Federal holiday Next business day Day after next

Practical tip: If you need funds quickly, submit your check before 3:00 PM ET as a buffer — app processing can occasionally delay submission by 30–60 minutes during peak periods.

AmEx vs Other Banks: Mobile Deposit Limit Comparison

The AmEx $5,000 daily limit is on the conservative side for an online savings account. Here’s how it compares to competitors:

Bank Daily limit 30-day limit Cutoff time
American Express $5,000 $10,000 5:00 PM ET
Synchrony Bank $10,000 $10,000 5:00 PM ET
Ally Bank $50,000 $250,000 4:00 PM ET
Marcus by Goldman Sachs $10,000 Varies 5:00 PM ET

For accounts with large one-time check deposits — a home sale escrow check, an inheritance, or a settlement — the AmEx limits mean you’d need multiple deposits over multiple days. In those cases, a wire transfer is a more practical option. See the AmEx HYSA transfer limits and wire instructions for routing number and wire details.

Other Ways to Fund Your AmEx Savings Account

Mobile check deposit is just one funding method. If a check exceeds the $5,000 daily limit, or you want faster access to large amounts, here are your alternatives:

  • ACH transfer from a linked external checking account — 1–3 business days, most common method
  • Wire transfer — same-day or next-day for large amounts; AmEx’s routing number is 124085066
  • Direct deposit — route a paycheck directly to your HYSA using routing 124085066
  • Mail a physical check — contact American Express banking support for the mailing address
