The out-the-door (OTD) price is the total you pay for a vehicle — including sales tax, title, registration, and dealer fees. Always request the out-the-door price when comparing dealers, not just the vehicle price or monthly payment. Sales tax alone adds 4–10% to the vehicle price depending on your state.

Fees You Should Refuse

Some dealers add fees that are not mandatory:

  • Market adjustment markup — dealer profit above MSRP. Negotiate it out or shop elsewhere.
  • Advertising fee — should already be in the MSRP. Decline separately added advertising fees.
  • VIN etching — can be done yourself for $20 vs. the dealer’s $300–$500 charge.
  • Nitrogen fill — air is already 78% nitrogen; not worth $150–$300.
  • Window tinting / paint sealant / fabric protection — usually overpriced; buy independently.

How to Request an Out-the-Door Quote

When emailing dealers:

“I am ready to purchase a [Year Make Model Trim] within the next 10 days. Please send me your complete out-the-door price including all taxes and fees. I am comparing quotes from multiple dealers and will choose the lowest total price.”

This email approach forces dealers to reveal the full cost. Dealers who respond with a monthly payment or just the vehicle price are avoiding the full cost comparison — push back by restating the request.
