The wealthiest 1% of households in Great Britain had household wealth of at least £3,121,500 in April 2020 to March 2022, according to the ONS Wealth and Assets Survey, the latest release. This page uses household wealth, which counts property, private pensions, financial assets and physical possessions, net of debts. ONS accreditation of the survey has been suspended from this round while it works on quality, so treat the figures as indicative.

What do the wealthiest households own?

For the wealthiest 10% of households, ONS says net property wealth (38%) and private pension wealth (36%) made up most of their wealth. At the 99th percentile, ONS gives these household figures for each component:

Component at the 99th percentile Value
Net property wealth £1,430,000
Private pension wealth £1,334,400
Net financial wealth £866,000
Physical wealth £266,000

Component percentiles are published separately, so they do not add up to the total-wealth percentile of £3,121,500.

How concentrated is wealth?

In April 2020 to March 2022 the wealthiest 1% of households held 10% of all household wealth in Great Britain, the same share as the least wealthy 50% of households combined.

Why age matters

Median household wealth by the age of the household head peaks at £502,500 for 65 to 74, against £15,200 at 16 to 24 and £373,100 at 75 and over. Pension and property wealth build up over a working life, which is why the top of the distribution skews older.
